  • Kimberly Hoyt Smith - Jun. 16, 2012

There were really three groups of Smith grandchildren:  Kim, Mike, Rod and Steve belonged to group one.  Group two were the pesky brothers and sisters:  Rex, Darren, Scott, and Susie.  Group three were the babies:  Daniel, Laura, and Brian.  We played for hours at Grandma and Grandpa Smith's house -- jumping out of the barn loft, climbing trees, creating sand messes, running and hiding from Uncle David (hoping he would find us just to be tickled to death), and running up and down the lane.  Mike, Rod, Steve, and I played together.  Steve ALWAYS had to be the super-hero of the group.  He always had the tallest tales and the strength of Super Man.  Scott called him, "Tee-tee."  So we did, too.  Steve once told my mom, "Aunt Pat, I can't take a bath because water hurts me."  We laughed for years about childhood antics.

Last winter, at work, I shared with one of my co-workers that my cousin, Steve, had cancer.  The female co-worker replied, "Oh, Steve was in my high school class.  He was SOo o o o o  good looking."  And he was.

This week one of his friends was at my house again sharing stories with us.  I asked this friend how Steve came to be known as Hollywood.  This guy said that when they were cruising for chicks, the girls would flock to Steve.  He said, "Steve wouldn't even be looking for a girl, but the girls were sure looking for him."  Thus, they decided to nickname him, "Hollywood."  (I don't know if I believe him about Steve not looking for a girl!)  Anyway, it was a good story!

"The great gift of family life is to be intimately acquainted with people you might never even introduce yourself to had life not done it for you." God blessed me with family like Steve.  He was there for me when Darren passed away, calling, visiting.  The most recent moment I cherish with Steve was when he shared with me that he had been baptized.  Although I shall miss growing old with him, I shall miss him for only a brief time.

We had such good times playing when we were younger.  Why did we have to grow up and face this harsh world?  You were so loved, Steve.  You lived a life of integrity and made many people proud.  We will never forget you.  God just needed you more.  Go run, jump, and tackle your friends with great abandon.
