DAVID EUGENE ABEL

 69, of Neoga, Illinois, passed away at 10:32 AM, Tuesday, March 9, 2021 in the HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.  He was born December 21, 1951 in Coles County, Illinois the son of Chester J. "Chet" and Irene (Zike) Abel.  David married Donna Lynn Garlock March 15, 1975 in  Mattoon, Illinois and Donna passed away April 1, 2014.  Mr. Abel was a retired Electronic Technician  for General Electric Lamp Plant in Mattoon, Illinois after 39 years of service.  David built his house on Lake Mattoon in 1978 where he spent many years making friendships with many in the community.  David was known all around Lake Mattoon for his waterskiing ability and his love for boating.  He loved nothing more than seeing the joy in others as he shared this passion with anyone he could.  He was a member of the Friends Of Lake Mattoon and he coached and supported several youth baseball programs throughout his life. David enjoyed watching his sons and grandson playing baseball and rarely missed a game. David is survived by his sons Brian Abel of Neoga, Illinois and Todd Abel (Erin) of Springfield, Illinois; grandchildren, Alexis, Gavin, Claire and Katelyn Abel; Sister-in-law Nancy Abel of Gulf Shores, Alabama.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna Abel and brother, Allen Abel.  
David's family were his pride and joy. His commitment and loyalty to his family was most important to him.

A Celebration Of Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 13, 2021 in the Swengel - O’Dell Funeral Home in Neoga, Illinois.  Visitation will be Saturday March 13, 2021 from 9:00 AM until service time in the funeral home *Due to Covid-19 concerns, social distancing and facial covering guidelines are encouraged. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery of Neoga, Illinois.
