DAVID MEHL Obituary

DAVID "George" MEHL

David A. "George" Mehl of Overland Park, Kansas passed away Saturday February 10, 2024.  He was born January 23, 1955 in Mattoon, Illinois, the son of Walter A. and Helen M. (Russell) Mehl.
Mr. Mehl, known as "George" by his family and "Bakka" by his grandkids, was a route driver for several different companies, primarily in Illinois and North Carolina, throughout his working years. He resided in Mattoon, Illinois before moving to Kansas in 2021. There, you would find him on the porch swing, mowing, or tinkering with his Chevy truck. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends; spoiling his yellow lab, Duke; watching westerns, and drinking coffee at all hours. In Kansas, he spent his time with his daughter and grandkids, while battling lung cancer. He attended the Lutheran churches in Sigel, and Mattoon, Illinois.
Mr. Mehl is survived by his children Kristi Roman (David) of Overland Park, Kansas and Clay Mehl of Springfield, Missouri; grandchildren Ava and D.J. Roman of Overland Park, Kansas and Ashley Mehl of Springfield, Missouri; brother, Wendell Mehl of Olney, Illinois; sisters, June McKenna (Tim) of Mattoon, Illinois and Leona Czwerwonka of Tuscola, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant children; brother, Don Mehl; sister, Carol Koester and brother-in-law, Don Czerwonka.
Memorials are suggested to Unleashed Pet Rescue in Mission, Kansas to support his granddaughter's passion for dogs. Donations can be made at https://www.unleashedrescue.com/donate/.
Per David's request, he will be cremated. Visitation and Memorial Services will be held at Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home in Neoga, Illinois, with visitation at 9:00 and services starting at 10:00a.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024.  Burial will be in the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery in Big Spring Township Shelby County, Illinois immediately following services.
