ROBERT LAWRENCE "BOB" YOUNG

Robert  Lawrence "Bob" Young, 91, of Mattoon, Illinois, passed away Thursday February 1,  2024 in his residence surrounded by family.  He was born March 11, 1932 in Shelby County, Illinois the son of Oscar Loren and Eula Mae (Cameron) Young.  He proudly served in the United States Air Force.  Bob married Joan Merle Gilbert July 20, 1952 in the Christian Church in Neoga, Illinois she survives.  He was a retired Maintenance Supervisor at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, Illinois.  He was a member of the United Christian Church in Mattoon, Illinois, Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Guild in Mattoon, Illinois, Heartland Christian Village steering committee, Neoga American Legion Post 458, Christian Motorcycle Club.  Mr. Young was probably best known for his being Santa Claus along with his wife, Mrs. Claus (Joan) for many many years and gatherings, he loved to make people smile.  He also was a talented guitar player and singer performing many church sessions and other gatherings.  Most of all Bob loved being with his wife, family and friends.  He is survived by his wife of over 71 years Joan Young of Mattoon, Illinois; children, Larry Dean Young of Mattoon, Illinois, Tony Lee Young (Julie) of Mattoon, Illinois, Bobbie Jo Trimble of Lewisville, Texas and Sheila Kay Elder (Mike) of Mattoon, Illinois; Fifteen grandchildren; Fifteen great grandchildren; Four great great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Ann Gaarder of Sherman, Texas, Patricia Mae Jayroe  of Butler, Pennsylvania; brother in law, Marvin Tryon of Spencer, Indiana.   He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul Dean Young; sister, Barbara Lee Tryon; grandchildren, Steven Briers and Conner Shemus Trimble; son in law, Curt Trimble; brother in laws, Harry Hepner and Dean Gaarder.
Memorials are suggested to the Heartland Senior Living Auxiliary in Neoga, Illinois or United  Christian Church in Mattoon, Illinois.
As Per Bob’s wishes cremation rites will be accorded and a Celebration Of his life will be held at 12:00 Noon Thursday, February 8, 2024 in the Swengel - O’Dell Funeral Home in Neoga, Illinois.  Visitation will be Thursday, February 8, 2024 from 10:00 am until service time also in the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery in Neoga, Illinois.
